My only exposure to golf was growing up in Maine and finding my dad’s dusty wooden golf clubs in the garage. After graduating from Georgetown University’s MBA program, I joined PepsiCo, which at the time owned Yum Brands and has since spun off. I worked in HR and went on several sales conferences around the country only to learn that a big part of the conferences was playing in company-sponsored golf tournaments. While my managers and colleagues (more often male) played in the tournaments I sat in my hotel room twiddling my fingers and wondering what I missing. It wasn’t long before I convinced myself that I needed to learn how to play this game, so I did! It was scary and I really didn’t want to make a fool of myself at the next tournament. I jumped in and took a bunch of lessons with a local pro; however, I sure wish I would have known a coach like me to work with before I took my first lesson.
